Why Materials Matter

The Mad Sails Standard: Why Our Materials Matter
  • Consistency: Every lot of cloth is tested for stretch and weight, so your new sail performs exactly like the proven patterns Ryan has refined.

  • Durability: We have selected materials engineered for ever-changing conditions and high UV environments, ensuring your sail stays white (or colorful!) and crisp for years.

  • The Technical Edge: By using the same materials as the “big lofts” but with the personal touch of a local Wisconsin loft, we give you the best of both worlds: Industry standard technology and hometown service.

Our Trusted Vendors:

Dimension Polyant

The global leader in sailcloth technology. We utilize their SQ (Square) HTP® plus lines which includes their One Design Ripstop for our high-performance racing sails because of their legendary “1% bias control” and zero-stretch characteristics.  This premium cloth comes in various weights which we use to suit each individual class minimum limits.

Because cruising sails are unique in that they are designed for performance and long term durability we utilize Dimension Polyant’s C-Breeze line.  This comes in a variety of weights and colors to suit the individual class specifications.

For those classes that allow sailcloth to be laminated we use Dimension Polyant’s PX Black Line.  Designed to handle high loads, this cloth is highly stable meaning your sail will continue to perform for countless seasons.

Contender Sailcloth

When it comes to downwind sails, we like the consist quality of Contender Superkote. We use their specialized nylons for our Flying Scot and Buccaneer spinnakers because they are strong, light and stable.  This ensures your spinnaker will keep its shape and be durable through for many seasons of use.

Challenge Sailcloth

Challenge is the world leader of dyed woven cloth.  We appreciate the consistency, vibrancy and wide color selection of their Newport line for the multitude of color customized sails we build each year.

Robichaud Batten Systems (RBS)

A great sail needs a reliable skeleton. We use RBS E-Glass tapered battens to ensure our sails maintain a smooth, aerodynamic foil without the “hard spots” caused by inferior, mass-produced battens.

Samson Rope

We trust Samson Rope Ultra Blue for our bolt ropes to ensure a smooth hoist and zero ‘luff-bunching’ over the life of the sail.  It is lightweight and stronger and more durable than polypropylene.

*Our commitment to quality extends to the smallest details. From UV-stabilized polymer threads to marine-grade hardware, every component has been tested and selected to survive the rigors of competitive racing and harsh UV environments.
