Mad Sails is a well-established sail loft located just outside Madison, Wisconsin, that is owned and run by Ryan Malmgren and Stacey Rieu.  Using high quality materials, Ryan designs and builds the sails himself with a careful attention to detail that cannot be matched by overseas mass production.  Despite the superior quality, Mad sails are priced competitively, and you can’t beat the personal attention provided by Ryan and Stacey!

After taking a stab at law school in the late 1980’s, Ryan decided to follow his sailing passion instead.  He taught sailing at the Puget Sound Sailing Institute in Seattle and worked production with Jack Christiansen at Shore Sails and later, North Sails.  In 2002, Malmgren returned to his Midwestern roots in Madison, Wisconsin.  He opened his own production loft — Madison Sails, which quickly morphed into Mad Sails.  In 2013, Ryan married Stacey Rieu, an excellent sailor in her own right, and she began working full-time at the loft several years later when it moved to Verona, Wisconsin.

Ryan grew up sailing dinghies, and over the years, he became an expert sailor in a variety of boats including Thunderbirds, Flying Scots, Thistles, Lasers, MCs and various other one-designs and keel boats.  Now he uses his lifetime of competitive sailing and over thirty years of sailmaking experience to create unique sail designs that go fast.
