Your Vision, Handcrafted in Nylon
When we say “custom art spinnaker,” we don’t mean a digital print. We mean a high-performance, full inlay creation. Mad Sails is unique in that we specialize in this traditional, hand-crafted technique. We transform your logos, mascots, or abstract designs into vibrant, durable spinnakers that fly beautifully and won’t delaminate like print.
The Inlay Process Step-by-Step
Step 1: Design & Scaling
It all starts with your vector artwork. We scale the image to the full-size pattern. This pattern is laid out to establish the exact boundaries of every color boundary and shape.
Step 2: Precision Outline
Ryan builds the underlying structure of the spinnaker first. Once the main panels are assembled, he meticulously traces the scaled art design directly onto the primary nylon fabric, outlining where every color and panel intersection needs to be.
Step 3: The Tape-Bond Inlay
This is the critical step. Individual pieces of color-matched nylon are rough cut for the size of the shape they need to represent. These pieces are then integrated into the spinnaker body using our specialized, high-strength tape-bond glue. This process creates an completely stitchless, airtight, and smooth surface that bonds the fabric together.
Step 4: The Back-Cut Finish
Once the artwork panels are permanently bonded, the process is finished with a master’s touch. Ryan then performs a “reverse cut” from the back of the sail, carefully trimming away the original backing material, leaving only the complex art panels integrated into the spinnaker’s shape.
